DATO’ KAMIL OTHMAN

Senior Vice President – Mufe® Malaysia – International Market

His career prior to the current posting has been quite diversified, beginning with Shell Malaysia after returning from his studies in the United Kingdom in 1981.

He was the Finance Manager for the Shell Refining Company Bhd. in Port Dickson until 1990, and after that he was posted to the Business Re-Engineering Team at Shell Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. At Shell, he also had stints in the Management Accounting, Retail and Corporate Communications Divisions.

In 1999, he was headhunted for the Multimedia Development Corporation in Cyberjaya. Firstly as Head of Corporate Communications then as Vice President for the newly set up Creative Multimedia Division in 2002. He oversaw the development of the Animation and CGI Industries in the Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) project.

It was during this period that the foundation for the phenomenal growth of home-grown (Malaysian) Animation and VFX companies were laid down. It was also during this time that he executive produced “Saladin”, a co-production with Al Jazeera Children’s Channel in Qatar.

In 2015 he was seconded to the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) as its Director General, a position he held until end of 2016. During this short tenure, he opened up FINAS to the international landscape and implemented many initiatives designed to support the new generation of content creators and to roll out FINAS into the digital era.

In 2015 he was elected as the Vice President for the Asian Film Commissioners Network (AFCNET) based in Busan, South Korea. A testament to Dato’ Kamil Othman’s passion and deft for film is his reinstatement as Vice President of the Asian Film Commission Network in Korea back in October 2016.

After his term at FINAS ended, he was appointed as Advisor on Creative Industries to the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia where he oversees, and reviews, policies that have impact on the development of the Creative Industries in Malaysia. He is also a member of the Creative Sector Think-Tank Committee under Akademi Sains Malaysia. He helped many start-ups in Digital and Animation sectors in Malaysia.
